SAINT SOPHIA AFTERNOON

GREEK SCHOOL

History

The St. Sophia Afternoon Greek School of Albany, New York has been in existence for over almost 100 years and serves the needs of the Greek - American population of the Capital District area of New York State.

In the early years, the school was held in the church basement and all the classes were taught by the parish priest. Under the leadership of many past directors, most recently in the past 3 decades under the direction of the Ms. Elektra Sokaris, Mr. Peter Marathakis, Mrs. Eleni Damaskos-Christou and Mrs Kiki Maglaras, the school has continued to sustain enrollment. Presently the school is directed by the Education Committee of the Parish Council of The St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church.

The school offers classes from Pre-school to advanced high school levels. In addition, it offers one adult class for friends of the Greek language and culture. Classes times and schedules vary from year to year depending on the enrollment and needs of students.

Our students come from wonderful families with different backgrounds and proficiency levels.  In order to enhance learning and meet student needs better we reorganized our curriculum, created new student groups and implemented a new school program for the 2020-2021 school year. Two great features of this new program are the relatively small size of each class and the grouping of students according to individual linguistic proficiency level as assessed and recommended by the teachers.  The classrooms are equipped with Wi-FI, smart TV’s and white boards.  In addition, all our students benefit from Greek culture and music instruction. The school curriculum has also been enriched with pedagogically appropriate student projects in addition to a field trip to the Greek Independence Day Parade in New York City.

Students in the advanced level with correlating proficiency have the opportunity to take the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek.  This test is administered by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese every June.  Successful performance leads to granting of high school academic credit by the student’s local school district.  Greek School graduates may also sit for the Level A1, A2 and B1 Examination for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek also known as the Ellinomatheia exam, which is offered by the Greek Government in May in Astoria, N.Y.

Over the past few years, some organizational, curriculum and staffing changes have been made in order to meet the needs of our students. As our population structure changes, the need of individualized instruction has been increased. The second and third generation of Greek-Americans will challenge our Greek school in many areas. We are proud of the many positive changes we have instituted so far and we will continue to strive for improvement on all fronts, as we look confidently into the 21st century.

Mission Statement

The St. Sophia Afternoon Greek School is dedicated to the teaching of the Greek language and cultural heritage by offering high quality, stimulation in a fun learning environment.  It is our belief that such a combination will lead to the development of a strong Greek-American identity through a collaborative partnership with the students, parents and teachers. It is well known and universally recognized that the Greek language and culture played vital roles in global civilizations.  The arts and sciences, as well as the importance of athletics, were highly regarded by our ancestors who founded and developed them in remarkable fashion.  It is important to embrace this exceptional heritage and to make every effort to convey to our children a love for the Greek language, culture and its customs and traditions.
